The Search for the Most Beautiful Celestine I Have Ever Seen
Today I get up at four in the morning.
Most people are still asleep, but for me the day begins long before sunrise. It is still dark when I leave home. The coffee has barely started working and I am already on the road.
Hours of driving, airports, flights and travelling lie ahead of me, followed by an entire day devoted to one mission: finding the most spectacular celestine specimens possible for our community.

While many people are beginning an ordinary day, I am starting a small adventure.
And the truth is that I love it.
Behind every extraordinary mineral there is much more than people usually imagine when they see it cleaned, photographed and ready to find a new home.
There is searching.
There are kilometres travelled.
There is tiredness.
There are hours spent comparing one specimen with another.
Above all, there is a genuine passion for finding minerals that are truly worth selecting.
At that hour of the morning, any help in staying alert is welcome. Even trying to persuade the traffic lights to change more quickly by using slightly unconventional methods.

And, of course, there was plenty of coffee.

I do not want to romanticise the process too much. Searching for minerals is exciting, but it also means waking up early, travelling for hours, waiting, carrying boxes and maintaining concentration when the body is already beginning to feel the strain.
Eventually, I arrive at the airport. The first stage is complete, although the real work has not even begun.

After all the travelling comes the most exciting moment: entering a space filled with minerals and beginning to examine the specimens one by one.
Looking closely at the crystals.
Studying the colour.
Turning each piece under the light.
Comparing the formations.
Rejecting some.
Setting others aside to examine again later.
And repeating the process for hours.
Because I was not looking for just any celestine.
I was looking for the specimens that would make me stop for a few seconds and think:
“These ones are special.”
When One Specimen Changes Everything
Among hundreds of pieces, some stand out immediately.
They are not always the largest. They are not necessarily the bluest either. Sometimes it is the shape of the crystals. At other times, it is the depth of the cavity, the transparency, the lustre or the way the light passes through certain areas.
Then these specimens appeared.

Its structure seemed almost impossible: large blue crystals growing over one another, with brilliant faces and transparent areas that changed every time the piece moved.
I have seen thousands of minerals over the years. I have selected countless batches and have been fortunate enough to hold some truly remarkable specimens. Even so, these celestines from Madagascar managed to surprise me.
Some contained deep cavities lined with crystals of different sizes, as though the inside of the rock concealed a frozen landscape.

Others looked more compact at first, but revealed hundreds of tiny reflective faces when viewed more closely.

Some combined a deep cavity with large, darker blue-grey crystals surrounded by a paler crystalline border.

This was exactly what I had been searching for: specimens with their own personality. Pieces that could never be mistaken for one another and that continued to reveal new details every time they were observed.
What Is Celestine?
Celestine, also widely known as celestite, is a mineral composed of strontium sulphate, with the chemical formula SrSO4.
Its internationally accepted mineral name is celestine, although celestite remains widely used in the mineral trade and among collectors. Its name comes from the Latin word caelestis, meaning “celestial” or “of the sky”, referring to the delicate blue colour for which it is best known.
Celestine belongs to the baryte group, alongside other structurally related sulphate minerals. In celestine, the dominant element is strontium; in baryte, it is barium.
Its ideal chemical composition is approximately:
- 47.7% strontium
- 17.5% sulphur
- 34.8% oxygen
Small quantities of calcium or barium may also be present within its structure.

Although it may look light and delicate, celestine often feels surprisingly heavy. Its relatively high density is caused by the presence of strontium.
It is also soft and fragile. It scratches easily and may split along its natural cleavage planes, so it must be handled with care.
Why Is Celestine Blue?
Chemically pure celestine may be colourless or white. It can also occur in grey, yellow, orange, reddish, greenish, brown or pale blue shades.
The famous sky-blue colour is not simply caused by a pigment-like impurity. It is mainly associated with colour centres and structural defects within the crystal lattice, which alter the way the mineral absorbs and reflects light. Certain trace elements may help to stabilise these colour centres.
This is why not every celestine displays the same shade of blue.
Some are almost white, with only a slight blue reflection. Others display a grey-blue tone. The most striking specimens may show stronger blue colour and greater transparency, especially when the crystals are large and well formed.
Colour was not the only factor considered during our selection. We also examined:
- The definition of the crystal faces
- Transparency and lustre
- The intensity and distribution of the blue colour
- The depth of the cavities
- The size and arrangement of the crystals
- The presence of broken crystals
- The stability of the matrix
- The overall balance of the specimen
Some specimens had beautiful colour but too many damaged crystals. Others were large but lacked clearly defined formations. The best examples were those in which colour, structure, lustre and form appeared to be in harmony.
How Does a Celestine Geode Form?
Celestine forms mainly in sedimentary, evaporitic and diagenetic environments. It is commonly associated with limestone, dolostone, marl, gypsum, anhydrite and saline deposits.
It may also fill cracks and cavities through which strontium-rich groundwater or brines have circulated. Less commonly, it occurs in low-temperature hydrothermal veins and cavities within certain volcanic rocks.
Many celestine geodes are thought to develop through a process of mineral replacement.
A nodule of gypsum or anhydrite may gradually dissolve when exposed to strontium-rich fluids. Because strontium sulphate is much less soluble, celestine begins to precipitate on the walls of the cavity.
Given enough time and the right conditions, the crystals slowly grow inwards towards the open space.
The result may be a cavity completely lined with crystals.
Changes in fluid chemistry, temperature, available space and growth rate all influence the final appearance. Some geodes develop a layer of small, even crystals, while others form large tabular or prismatic crystals.
What we hold in our hands is therefore the visible result of a geological process requiring very specific conditions and an immense period of time.
Where Is Celestine Found?
Celestine occurs in many parts of the world.
Madagascar is particularly famous for its pale blue geodes, which are highly valued by mineral collectors and for decorative use.
Other important or historically recognised localities include Sicily, England, the United States, Mexico, Poland, Iran, China and Spain.
Spain also possesses highly significant industrial deposits. The Montevive–Escúzar area in Granada contains one of Europe’s most important celestine deposits.
In modern industrial production, Iran, Spain, China and Mexico have all played major roles. Celestine remains one of the principal mineral sources of strontium.
Industrial Uses of Celestine
Celestine is the principal ore used to obtain strontium, an element employed in several industrial processes.
One of its best-known applications is pyrotechnics. Certain strontium compounds produce the intense red colour seen in fireworks, flares and emergency signals.
Strontium compounds are also used in:
- Ceramic ferrite magnets
- Specialised drilling fluids
- Technical glass and ceramics
- Pigments and industrial fillers
- Alloys and metallurgical processes
- The manufacture of specialised chemical compounds
Strontium was once widely used in glass for cathode-ray television screens, although this application has become far less important with the disappearance of traditional CRT televisions.
Spiritual and Energetic Properties of Celestine
Within modern crystal healing traditions, celestine is regarded as one of the great stones of consciousness.
It is described as having a high, gentle and deeply peaceful vibration. Its energy is not generally considered forceful or aggressive. Instead, it is associated with inner stillness, clarity, trust and spiritual openness.
Perhaps this is why its connection with the sky feels so natural. Even before learning about its energetic correspondences, its colour, transparency and crystalline geometry can evoke a sense of silence, space and serenity.
Peace and Harmony
Celestine is traditionally used to calm tense environments and encourage a more peaceful inner state.
It is commonly associated with:
- Inner peace
- Emotional calm
- Harmony during conflict
- Comfort during disappointment or uncertainty
- Trust in personal and spiritual processes
- The creation of peaceful and welcoming spaces
It is not generally considered a stone that pushes a person into forceful action. Its quality is more like an invitation to stop, breathe and listen.
Angelic and Spiritual Connection
Celestine is one of the minerals most strongly associated with angelic realms, spiritual guides and divine energies.
It is traditionally used to:
- Deepen meditation
- Support prayer and contemplation
- Encourage a sense of spiritual companionship
- Develop intuition
- Facilitate communication with guides
- Increase sensitivity during energetic practices
- Explore dreams, symbols and inner messages
For this reason, celestine is often placed on altars, in meditation rooms, healing spaces and bedrooms.
Dreams and Rest
Celestine is traditionally placed near the bed to create a peaceful atmosphere and support calmer dreams.
It is also used to:

- Work consciously with dreams
- Create a calmer bedroom atmosphere
- Settle the mind before sleep
- Support periods of disturbed sleep or nightmares
Because celestine is fragile, geodes and clusters should be placed on a stable surface, ideally on a bedside table rather than beneath the pillow.
Calm Communication
Because of its blue colour, celestine is strongly associated with the throat chakra.
It is traditionally used when someone wishes to:
- Express the truth calmly
- Communicate difficult feelings
- Speak clearly without confrontation
- Find words during emotional blockage
- Listen more openly
- Soften tense conversations
Rather than encouraging impulsive or forceful expression, celestine is associated with conscious, honest and peaceful communication.
Third Eye and Crown Chakra
Celestine is also linked with the third eye and crown chakra.
At the third eye, it is used for intuition, imagination, dreams and inner vision.
At the crown chakra, it is associated with spiritual connection, trust, mental stillness and openness to a wider state of awareness.

In a Room
A geode or cluster may be placed in a visible and stable location to create a peaceful focal point within the room.
It is particularly suitable for:

- Places used for prayer or rest
During Meditation
Celestine may be placed in front of the body, held carefully in the hands or positioned near the third eye or crown for a few minutes.
There is no need to place a heavy geode directly on the body. Its presence nearby is sufficient within this type of practice.
For Communication
It may be placed near the throat during meditation or held before an important conversation while setting an intention of clarity, calm and honesty.
Combining Celestine with Other Minerals

Celestine is delicate. Its low hardness, brittleness and cleavage mean that it should always be handled carefully.
Avoid:

- Scrubbing with hard objects
- Prolonged exposure to water
- Salt or salt water
- Soap and chemical cleaners
- Alcohol
- Ultrasonic cleaning
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
- Preparing direct-immersion crystal elixirs
To remove dust, use a very soft brush, cool air or a dry cloth without applying pressure to the crystals.
For energetic cleansing, gentle methods may be used, including:
- Incense, sage or palo santo smoke
- Sound
- Selenite
- A clear quartz cluster
- Meditation and intention
- Indirect moonlight
A Selection That Was Never Random
After examining so many specimens, I was reminded of something I have learnt repeatedly during my years working with minerals: choosing well is not simply about searching for supposed perfection.
A natural formation may contain small irregularities, inclusions or variations in colour. These characteristics are part of its history.
What matters is finding pieces with presence.
Celestines in which form, blue colour, transparency and crystallisation create something that is difficult to ignore.
That is why I feel particularly proud of this selection.
They are not simply beautiful minerals.
They are the result of a day that began at four in the morning, many hours of travelling, careful examination and a constant search for specimens capable of moving another person as much as they moved me when I first found them.
When one of these celestines reaches your home, I want you to know that it was not chosen at random.
It was personally selected from among hundreds of specimens.
When a mineral feels like a genuine work of natural art, I believe it deserves to find a home where someone will pause to observe it, discover its details and value it as deeply as I do.
These celestines undoubtedly belong to that category.
